When you get back to it.

What have we been up to?

At the weekend we spent the night in Edinburgh.

We chose budget over luxury, and we chose pretty well.

Image result for travelodge advertisingWe booked the Travelodge in Meuse Lane in Edinburgh; pretty dang central if you want cheap in the city centre.   This Travelodge does not provide the little Likey-You puppets in the advert (which always disappoints me),  but does have very comfy beds,  luxury soft towels, and all the usual TV / Coffee / assortment in the room.

The entrance is not quite as salubrious as you would hope.  Being exceptionally close to Princes Street, yet, not on it;  and being exceptionally close to St Andrew's Square, but not on it.... it's hidden in a dark little lane behind Princes Street.   The Travelodge Door shines out like a beacon of hope in the darkness, and that is good- because you know where to find it in the dark.

The staff are lovely - and the views are very lovely .  Well our view was lovely -  we were on the 7th Floor.  All the rooms have windows, but I can't promise that everyone will have views as glorious as this, or weather quite as pretty.

Why for were we there?   For a cheeky visit to Brew Dog's Hop Exchange

Recently opened on Lothian Road, the Hop Exchange sits on Sheraton Square. It's pretty dang massive (well compared to the relatively small Bar in the Cowgate, the Hop Exchange is spacious and lively!   After partaking in a pint or two downstairs we were lovingly shifted upstairs for a table for eats.  Cluck Norris Burger twice went down amazingly well.

After several more pints (drink responsibly, we wandered along the Grassmarket to the Cowgate, and sat in the outside area and enjoyed a nightcap before heading back up the Royal Mile to Prnces Street, and back to the hotel, where we had a very .... hmm, boozy sleep.

The morning after the night before, we headed for Weatherspoons, thinking cheap happy breakfast.

The Booking Office itself, is a lovely venue, and perhaps if i had been heading to town for a day's drinking (licenced from 9 am ).... it would have been ideal.  The bar is sparkly clean, the staff are friendly, and helpful, and Edinburgh.   But....

Please do not order the Eggs Benedict if you are indeedy a fan of Eggs Benedict like me. they are my ultimate feel better breakfast. these ones made me feel sick.

This picture is not of my Eggs benedict.  This is the "party official".  My rocket was wilted, and there were approximately 8 sprigs.  My sauce was white, and not thick.  The eggs were this really weird shape.  Like Duplo bricks.  Each egg, had under it, half a circle of cheap grey ham under it.  You know, the ham they slice in Morrison for you? well that, but the cheapest cut.  Thin cut, and not even folded into a quarter under the egg. The grey half slice hung limply over each side.

I looked at the "kitchen" which was a cordoned off area to the left of the front door, and I knew that complaining about the look of it was going to be met by "eh? "   this is not a "cordon bleu" kitchen; it's a pub, and you can't expect lushness.  It filled a hole and I wasn't sick.

But I won't be eating there again.

A wee wander up Cockburn Street, a wee bimble through the Grassmarket Saturday market, and then a look at the Farmers Market, while supping a coffee looking at the castle.

A lovely wee day.
